Compliments go a long way to making those we love feel special and appreciated for all they do for us.
With World Compliments Day this month, we took a deep dive into the reasons why it’s important to compliment your partner.
Compliments make us feel good — both giving them and receiving them.
Marcia Naomi Berger, a licensed clinical psychotherapist and the author of “Marriage Meetings for Lasting Love: 30 Minutes a Week to the Relationship You’ve Always Wanted” is a relationship expert. Her studies show that feeling valued and appreciated are actually basic human needs. In addition, she found that appreciation is a core foundation of a relationship, both those with our partners and with our friends.
Not all compliments are the same!
When giving a compliment, try to be sure that what you’re saying both is, and comes across as, sincere and genuine. It doesn’t need to be earth shattering, of course. Let your partner know that you like their outfit before a date night or the way they’ve done a chore around the house. Even better would be if you can offer a more meaningful compliment. Why not tell them how special they have made your life!
Most people like giving compliments face-to-face.
When quizzed on ‘how’ people like both receiving and giving compliments, most of us agree that face-to-face is the best way. In one study, over 58 per cent said their preferred method was face-to-face while only 20 per cent said they’d want a compliment on social media.
Spending quality time together is another way to create a better connection.
Apart from complimenting your partner, it’s as important to spend quality time together. Set up a romantic date night at home after work one day. Book a date using Cupla when you can see your partner has free time in their Calendar. Spending quality time together is a surefire way to keep the spark alive.
A simple card or note can make your partner’s day.
Handwritten notes and letters have lost popularity in recent times. Who doesn’t want to receive a handwritten love note?
Keep a stack of blank cards in your desk or bag to make it easy to leave a note for your partner, even on the go. Dial up the romance by writing a short message each day for a week. It’s bound to bring the spark back!
Remember: A little bit of love goes a long way!
In today’s fast-paced world, taking the time to compliment those around us is an art that shouldn’t be lost. Apart from giving a compliment to your partner consider sharing the love around to your family, friends, colleagues and perhaps even a stranger on the street!
Compliments go a long way to making those we love feel special and appreciated for all they do for us.
Whatever you love about your partner, let them know. Remind them of how special they are to you!
