Anniversary Date Ideas for Every Milestone and Budget

Growth Marketer

Fred spends his days figuring out how people discover Cupla and turning that into growth. Off the clock, he’s usually making music, building his fantasy world Mythanien, gaming, or plotting another trip between Germany and New Zealand, ideally with a cold non-alcoholic beer nearby.

For our first anniversary, my wife and I wanted to do it properly. A fancy restaurant, we decided. After a bit of research, we found one on a ship on the Rhine in Germany, which sounded wonderfully romantic. I put on my best jacket, my wife wore a fancy white dress, and off we drove to the river.

The “restaurant” turned out to be a shabby boat belonging to a local harbor club, somewhere in the middle of an industrial zone. The people on board were quite confused to have guests at all, let alone two guests dressed like that. It was so, so embarrassing. But we all did our best to get through it with humor and effort.

So consider this article my personal mission: to give you better ideas than I had, so your first anniversary (and every one after it) gets off to a better start than mine did.

By the way, the best anniversary date ideas don’t have to be the fanciest ones. They’re maybe just the ones that fit where you are right now. Whether you’ve been together for three months or ten years, have a whole weekend or just two hours on a Tuesday, there’s always something lovely you can do together. At Cupla, we spend a lot of time on how couples plan time together, so we’ve sorted this guide the way you’d actually decide.

What are the best anniversary date ideas?

The best anniversary date ideas match three things: how long you’ve been together, what you want to spend, and how much time you have. Personally, I’d go for one of three things: try something you’ve never done before, relive a particularly lovely memory, or come up with a tradition you can look forward to every year.

Our six favorite anniversary ideas, if you only read this far:

  1. Recreate your first date, down to the order you ate things in.
  2. Do something neither of you has done before, like a pottery class or a hike you’ve never walked.
  3. Write each other a letter about the past year and read them over dinner.
  4. Book one night away somewhere within two hours of home.
  5. Cook the meal from a trip you took together, at home, phones in a drawer.
  6. Start an anniversary tradition: same photo, same spot, every year.

How do you pick the right anniversary idea?

Pick your anniversary idea with three quick filters: how long you’ve been together, what you want to spend, and how much time you actually have. Figure those things out first, and you’ll have a much easier time deciding what to do. Saves you from booking an expensive weekend away when your partner was perfectly happy with a nice dinner.

How long you’ve been togetherIs this a first milestone or one of many?Early on, keep it light and new. Later, mix the new with the nostalgic.

Time availableAn evening, a full day, or a weekend? An evening suits a dinner or a class. A weekend opens up a trip.

One more filter that’s easy to forget: whose turn is it? If one of you always plans, hand the next anniversary to the other person, or split the day so you each plan half as a surprise.

Anniversary ideas by milestone

What feels special after three months might be a bit underwhelming after ten years. And vice versa! There’s no rule that says your tenth anniversary has to be some grand, expensive affair. Sometimes, revisiting a place that meant a lot to you years ago can be just as wonderful.

Monthiversary ideas (months 1 to 11)

A monthiversary is a small celebration on the same date each month, usually in the first year of dating. Keep it light. The point is a regular excuse for a good evening, not a monthly performance review.

  • Order the takeout from your first date and rewatch something you both like.
  • Take a photo in the same spot every month. By month 12, you’ve made a flipbook.
  • Walk a neighborhood in your own city that neither of you knows.
  • Ask each other one question you’ve never asked before.
  • Swap playlists: five songs each that remind you of the past month.

Skipping a month is fine. It’s a monthiversary, not a membership.

6 month anniversary ideas

Six months! Long enough to know each other’s coffee orders, but probably still plenty of things you haven’t discovered about each other. Why not celebrate by trying something neither of you has done before?

Couple sharing coffee from a thermos on a misty hilltop at sunrise, a simple 6 month anniversary idea
  • Take a one-off class together: pottery, salsa, or a cooking class with a cuisine neither of you can cook.
  • Plan a day trip to a town you’ve both been meaning to visit.
  • Finally book the restaurant you keep saying “we should go there” about.
  • Do a sunrise hike with coffee in a thermos. Early start, big payoff.
  • Make a “six months of us” playlist with one song for each month.

1 year anniversary ideas

Your first anniversary is a pretty big deal! You’ve made it through a whole year together, so I think it’s worth making a little extra effort. Doesn’t have to be anything extravagant, mind you. As my own first-anniversary disaster proves, fancy isn’t always better.

  • Recreate your first date, in as much detail as you can remember.
  • Take your first trip away together, even if it’s only one night.
  • Write each other a letter about the year, with a favorite moment from each month.
  • Go back to where you met and order what you ordered.
  • Print a small photo book of year one.
  • Sit down with a drink and pick three things you want to do together in year two.

5 year anniversary ideas and beyond

After a few years, it’s easy to default to the same nice restaurant. Try putting novelty first. In a set of studies led by psychologist Arthur Aron, couples who did a new and challenging activity together reported bigger gains in relationship quality than couples given a routine one (Aron et al., 2000).

  • Book the trip that’s been on your someday list for years.
  • Learn something together over a weekend: sailing, rock climbing, wine tasting.
  • Split the day: one of you plans the morning, the other plans the evening, both kept secret.
  • Go back to somewhere you visited early on and notice what’s changed, in the place and in you.
  • At 10 years, recreate your oldest photo together, same pose, same spot.

These ideas work for dating anniversaries and wedding anniversaries alike. Plenty of married couples quietly celebrate both.

Anniversary date ideas by budget

Some of the nicest dates cost next to nothing. So don’t feel pressured to splash out just because it’s your anniversary. Agree on a budget you’re both comfortable with, and see what you can make of it!

Free and at-home anniversary ideas

  • The anniversary dinner, at home. Cook the meal from your first date or a favorite trip. Tablecloth, candles, phones in a drawer.
  • A camera roll night. Scroll back to your earliest photos together and tell the stories behind them. One study found that people who recall relationship memories to feel close to their partner tend to report higher satisfaction (Aydin and Buyukcan-Tetik, 2021).
  • Stargazing in the backyard or on a blanket in the nearest dark park.
  • Anniversary letters. Write them separately, then swap and read them out loud.
  • A living room picnic with a proper picnic setup, because rain shouldn’t cancel anything.

Mid-range anniversary ideas

  • A cooking, pottery or cocktail class for two.
  • The tasting menu at a restaurant that’s been on your list.
  • Tickets to a show, a comedy night or a band you both love.
  • Book a hotel in your own city for a night. You get to feel like you’re on vacation without having to spend half the day traveling. And someone else makes breakfast!
  • A short photo session with a local photographer, so you finally have a photo where you’re both in it.

Splurge anniversary ideas

  • A weekend away somewhere neither of you has been.
  • A hot air balloon ride, a sailing trip or a helicopter flight.
  • The chef’s table or counter seats at a restaurant you’ve been saving for.
  • The big trip from your shared someday list.

If your partner feels most loved through gifts, pair any of these with something small and thoughtful. Our guide to gift-giving as a love language has ideas.

How do you recreate your first date for your anniversary?

Recreating your first date is one of the most personal anniversary ideas there is, and it works at any budget. Go back to the same place, order the same things, and talk about what you were each thinking that night.

A few ways to make it land:

  • Get the details right. Same table if you can, same drinks, same time of day. Dig through old messages to check what you actually wore.
  • If the place has closed, rebuild it at home. A playlist, the same cuisine, and a bit of effort go a long way.
  • Swap roles. Whoever asked the other out last time does the asking this time.
  • Go beyond the first date. Recreate your first trip, the first meal you cooked together, or your first night in your first home.

End the evening by comparing notes: what’s changed since that night, and what hasn’t.

How do you start an anniversary tradition?

The nice thing about anniversary traditions is that you get to make up your own rules. It can be something wonderfully simple, like taking the same photo every year. As long as it’s something you both look forward to, that’s all that matters.

That last part is backed by research. Couples who are deliberate about relationship rituals report feeling more satisfied, more invested and more committed than couples who aren’t, and the effect is strongest when both partners agree the ritual matters (Garcia-Rada, Sezer and Norton, 2019).

Anniversary traditions worth stealing:

  • The yearly letter. Write one to each other, seal it, and open it next anniversary.
  • The same photo. Same spot, same pose, every year. My wife and I take ours with an instant camera, and every polaroid goes into one anniversary album.
  • The anniversary questions. Ask each other the same five questions every year and keep the answers: What was your favorite day together this year? When did you feel most loved by me? What surprised you about us? What do you want more of next year? Where should we go next?
  • Somewhere new, every time. Pick a restaurant neither of you has tried, and make one rule: it’s never the same place twice.

How do you make sure you never miss your anniversary?

Save the date once, somewhere you’ll both see it, with reminders early enough to actually plan. Then put the plan itself in a calendar you share, so it can’t collide with a work dinner.

But here’s the thing. In a lot of couples, one person quietly becomes the one who remembers: birthdays, the dentist, and yes, the anniversary. Sharing that job is a small act of love in itself.

That shared job is exactly what Cupla is built for. Here’s how to set up your anniversary in the app:

  1. Save your anniversary as a key date. It repeats every year, and you both get reminders a week before, a day before and on the day.
  2. Switch on the countdown. You’ll both see exactly how long you’ve got, and the Cupla countdown widget puts it on your home screen.
  3. Plan the day in your shared calendar. Your schedules sit side by side, so you can spot the free evening before anyone books over it.
  4. Collect ideas all year. Add the restaurant they mentioned in March to a shared wishlist, so the planning is half done by the time the countdown gets short.

Here’s to better anniversaries

Whatever you pick, plan it together, and maybe check the street view before you dress up. My wife and I made it through our harbor club anniversary with our sense of humor intact, and with the ideas above, I hope yours starts off a little more smoothly.

FAQ: Anniversary Date Ideas

What do you do on a 1 year anniversary?

On a 1 year anniversary, mark the first full year with something a little bigger than a usual date night. Good choices are recreating your first date, taking a first trip away together, or writing each other a letter about the year and reading them over dinner.

How do you celebrate an anniversary at home?

To celebrate an anniversary at home, cook the meal from your first date or a favorite trip, set the table properly and put your phones away. Add something personal: look back through your earliest photos together, swap handwritten letters, or answer the same anniversary questions you’ll ask again next year.

What is a monthiversary?

A monthiversary is a small celebration on the same date each month, usually during the first year of a relationship. It’s meant to be light: a favorite takeout, a walk somewhere new, or a monthly photo in the same spot. Once you reach your first full anniversary, it usually gives way to a yearly celebration.

What should you do for a 6 month anniversary?

For a 6 month anniversary, choose something new you’ll both remember, since you’re still learning what the other person loves. A one-off class, a day trip to a town neither of you knows, or the restaurant you keep talking about are all good fits without feeling over the top.

How do you make an anniversary special without spending much?

Make an anniversary special by making it personal rather than expensive. Recreate your first date at home, write each other letters, go stargazing, or start a yearly tradition like the same photo in the same spot. The effort and the memories matter more than the price.
